This past week has been another challenge to get workouts in and stay motivated, but I got some RIDICULOUSLY exciting news at the end of the week!! This was concert week for our elementary schools! Being the music teacher, it is my job to put on these concerts and facilitate all the rehearsals. The ‘spring’ concerts (they called them spring concerts this past week even though they took place at the end of February;) happened on Monday and Thursday for each of my schools and featured the 3rd – 5th graders. These concerts were definitely more involved than the winter ones with the little kids, so it was a bit stressful trying to coordinate all the transitions and movements with so many kids on stage at once. But all went well and the parents were happy to see their kids up there performing for them!
It is so rewarding when the concerts are done, but boy was I a bundle of stress leading up to them. I know those are the times when I need to exercise the most, but it sure seems easy to lose motivation and want to curl up in a ball on the couch instead, and once I make that choice once it is harder and harder to get back out there.
Needless to say, I was lacking motivation this week but slowly but surely got back into my training. Monday was a rest day due to the concert. Tuesday I completed the same 30 minute spin workout as the previous week, followed by a 30 minute strength circuit workout:
35 squats, 10 R leg lunge, 10 L leg lunge, 10 L side lunge, 10 R side lunge
Repeat x3 (3rd time I completed jump squats and jump lunges)
50 crunches, 50 hip lift bridges, 10 R leg lift, 10 L leg lift, 10 R side leg life, 10 L side leg lift, 10 R leg lift on back, 10 L leg lift on back
10 one leg bridge lifts on each side, 30s bridge hold, 10 supermans, 30s superman hold, 10 supermans
10 R leg dip (on stairs), 10 R leg hip lift (stairs), 10 L leg dip (stairs), 10 L leg hip lift (stairs)
This strength workout has never failed me in marathon training! (knock on wood**)
On Wednesday I completed a 3.1 mile tempo run. This was another day with low motivation and I think I sat around trying to motivate myself to run for longer than I was actually out running! As always, I was glad that I completed it and it gave me confidence as it was a PR for me in the 5k distance!
Thursday was a rest day for the concert. On Friday, I completed the same 20 minute HIIT workout from the new IronStrength DVD. It’s hard to believe that next weekend is the Get Lucky half already, which means we are fully into March. I don’t know about anybody else, but this year sure is flying by! We are getting married at the beginning of August and there are only 5 months to go!! This weekend is my taper weekend before the race, so I ran 6 miles this morning and called it good. It felt pretty good but sure was cold – it was about 18 degrees when I went out there. In the past that temperature would have felt normal for winter running but with all the spring weather we’ve been having I’ve gotten spoiled!
We officially have 7 days to go until the Get Lucky Half in Chicago. I am so excited to run this because I love the city and all of the races I’ve run there have been so organized and fun that I just can’t get enough. I love the community that comes together and all the people you meet and stories you hear. This week will be an easy taper week to get ready!
Lastly, I found out on Thursday that I WILL BE RUNNING THE NEW YORK CITY MARATHON in November!!!!! I absolutely cannot believe that I got in the lottery on my first try, but I am absolutely THRILLED about it. I have always watched this marathon on TV and just can’t even believe the enormity of it. I have never been to NYC but it has been at the top of my list of places to travel to since I was a child and I can’t wait to put running and the city together into one weekend. Being a runner that runs more for fitness and health, I think this race will be perfect for me since I won’t be running for a time goal. I just can’t even imagine all of the people I will meet and things I will see. I’ll have to look up some of those crazy ice cream and donut shops to get my fill while I am there. If you have any suggestions please send them my way!! Have a wonderful week and enjoy all of the extra light in the evenings, we’ve almost made it through winter 🙂
