Well hello again, long time no see! It’s been a little longer than usual but I sure am glad to be back. These past two weeks have been very busy but rewarding! Let’s take this all the way back to two weeks ago, shall we 🙂
I’ve had a couple slacking weeks in terms of my training, that’s for sure! Two weeks ago I was still struggling to get rid of this cough (not that it’s entirely gone now, but at least it’s better). I spent a few nights waking randomly and not being able to fall back asleep because I couldn’t stop coughing. I was able to get in a spin workout on Monday, and tried a new one this time! This workout basically alternated between a seated hill climb for 3-4 minutes, a standing hill limb for 2 minutes, a downhill sprint for 1 minute and a recovery for 1 minute. Each time this was repeated the resistance was increased, and I did this for 30 minutes. I liked this workout because I was able to challenge myself based on what I was feeling.
Tuesday I got in 3.5 miles – this was supposed to be a 7 x 800s workout, but decided to run the distance instead of intervals because I was still battling the cough and hard runs seem to make it much worse. This was another night where I couldn’t fall asleep because of this gosh dang cough. The weather was beautiful outside and I still managed to get in fast (for me) miles, so I’d say it wasn’t totally worthless!
Wednesday I completed a workout on the New IronStrength DVD, the HIIT in 20 minutes. This workout felt decently hard, and I could definitely feel it in my legs the next day. Pretty productive for 20 minutes, I’d say! Thursday through Saturday was when I fell off the bandwagon this week. My fiance and I went to a retreat at our church for engaged couples called Pre Cana. We were definitely pretty stressed and wanting to relax and not go to a weekend long event by the end of the week, but it couldn’t have come at a better time. This retreat helped remind us of what is important and what really doesn’t matter in life, and refocused us on our priorities.
We were up in Grand Rapids for this retreat, so we stayed at my parents house for the weekend. I ran 12 miles with my mom on Sunday morning! This run felt great. It had snowed the previous night so there was a little dusting on the ground and it was still cold outside, but the sun was shining and we couldn’t complain. Although we definitely did complain about the wind (that was right in our face on the way out and boy was it cold!!). With two weeks to go until the Get Lucky half we felt pretty good about this one and were glad to get it done!
I signed up for an April Half Marathon in Grand Rapids, the Gazelle Girl half. I ran this race 3 years ago when it was just starting out. They didn’t have any metals and it was a very small race filled with mostly local people. As I was reading their site and looking through pictures from the past few years, it looks like it has grown so much! This is awesome and I am excited to run it again. I’m relatively familiar with the course where the race takes place, so I am going to use this as my goal race and try to set a PR. My current half PR is 2:07 and I would sure love to finish somewhere between 2:00 and 2:05. I think I will be able to do so! This race is only for women and I remember hearing some incredible stories last time and can’t wait to hear more this year.
Lent started this past week and I’ve decided to give up ice cream. I can’t even imagine what my life will be like for the next 40 (37 now) days without ice cream, but I am going to try my best to avoid it. I’ve had ice cream every night since I can remember, literally, so it has become a habit in my day and something I look forward to at 8:15 pm every night (not exaggerating;). In the past I have always chickened out when it came to Lent, giving up something half-heartedly and never choosing something that I thought would be a challenge. This will definitely prove to be a struggle for me, but I am determined to keep this goal. I guess that just means I’ll have to have more cake and cookies at night! I will keep you updated on the progress.
Hope you are having a great start to your weekend! I’ll check back in later with more updates:)
