Marathon Training Recap: Week 9

Marathon training is my favorite season and I'm excited to get back to it today. Here is my week 9 marathon training recap for the Indianapolis Marathon!

Here we are again, at the start of a new training week! Week 9 of marathon training was a bit of a jumbled mess due to travel, moving, packing, vacationing and everything else in between. We started this week off by finishing up packing our house and then headed across the state for a rehearsal with my husband’s new band. After that we spent a couple days at my in-laws and then drove to the Upper Peninsula for a few day vacation.

Summer brings extra daylight and more opportunities for running, but along with that comes travel and many more obligations than the rest of the year! This week was somewhat of a struggle in terms of fitting all the workouts in and I had to miss a few. Overall though, I am glad that I was able to prioritize the most important runs and fit them in, even in the midst of traveling and moving.

After my long run this week I started to feel a pretty relentless ache in my left hamstring and IT band. This, combined with all of the travel, allowed me to miss a run without feeling too guilty about it. I’m hoping that the extra rest day and few days off my feet will help the ache subside before it turns into anything bigger.

Indianapolis Marathon Training Recap: Week 9

Monday, 8/13 – Yoga

All of our things are officially packed, which means that I was stuck completing this yoga routine on my own without the DVD. I ended up fitting in these yoga poses much later in the day than usual, but was really glad I made the time for them. My hamstrings are getting significantly tighter as the mileage increases, and these poses really help loosen them up. I am still loving this yoga routine!

Tuesday, 8/14 – 6 miles: 1 x 1, 1 x 800, 1 x 400, 1 x 1, 1 x 800, 1 x 400

I ended up programming this workout into my watch wrong, and had three 400s in the second half instead of an 800 and 400. I was so tempted to just follow my watch and complete the 400s (since they are easier for me) but decided to run two in a row as if it were an 800. I’m glad I did so that I can say I successfully completed this workout!

This was my first time in a very long time running mile long intervals, so mentally I was a little worried heading into this workout. Once I got going, though, I was happy with how attainable the goal paces felt and proud of myself for completing each interval. I ran this on a trail near my in-laws that was only a mile long, so I ran up and down that trail 3 times. It turned out to be a great workout!

Wednesday, 8/15 – 12 miles

I was so skeptical heading into this workout immediately after finishing an interval run the day before. My legs felt really heavy and my right hip was really tight when I started, so I figured I would probably end up cutting the run short.

This turned out to be one of those weird runs where it got easier as I ran further. The more miles I completed, the more confident I felt that I would be able to complete all 12. I’m happy that these 12 miles didn’t feel too dreadful even though my mental game was a little off! Overall this wasn’t a bad run and went by surprisingly quickly.

Thursday, 8/16 – Rest

We spent 6 hours in the car driving to the Upper Peninsula today, and then hiked around Tahquamenon Falls for just about 3 miles. My legs were happy to get a break!

Friday, 8/17 – 4 miles

We stayed in Munising, Michigan for the long weekend so I ran up north along Lake Superior. I thought I found a running trail right by the lake, but it turned out to be a snowmobile trail. The trail was really rocky and bumpy which made running pretty tough! I almost turned around many times but was pretty stuck once I got going, so I figured I might as well tough it out and keep going. Despite the terrain my legs felt pretty good and this was an easy run!

Saturday, 8/18 – Rest

Another unusual rest day here. We were pretty busy in the morning and after discovering what the trail looked like I decided to just skip my last 4 mile run for the week. I was happy that I was able to fit in my interval run and long run, so I didn’t feel too guilty about missing this short run.

Sunday, 8/19 – Rest

We drove back from Munising on Sunday and spent the rest of the evening unpacking and getting situated for the week. After a week of travel and moving, I am excited that we will finally be closing on our house this Tuesday! Everything should be moved in my the end of the day on Friday, and then we’ll be able to begin unpacking.

I can’t wait until we are completely moved in and able to stay in one place for an entire week! This week’s running will be completed in new places, and I’m looking forward to exploring some new trails.

Happy running!
