Where is the time going?! I can’t believe we are nearly halfway through August. Training for any race has a way of making time go by even faster than usual. It’s easy to get so caught up in just crossing days off that you forget where you started! Time is flying and this is already the marathon training recap for week 8.
With just 12 weeks until race day, I am really starting to get excited! This week brought a cut back in mileage, and one of the last single digit long runs of the training plan. I love having a few recovery weeks thrown in when intensity really starts to increase, because after these weeks I am even more excited to get in some long runs.
This past week started off a bit crazy with a whole bunch of packing (which I reallly hate), but ended up being pretty calm the rest of the week. It was nice to have time to fit in every workout and not have to stress about rearranging the training plan. Here is my marathon training recap from week 8.
Indianapolis Marathon Training Recap: Week 8
Monday, 8/6 – Rest
Monday was a busy day spent packing! I am always surprised by how long packing takes and how tiring it is. I originally planned to complete my weekly yoga on Monday like usual, but decided against it once we got started packing. Today was an unplanned rest day but that extra 30 minutes was definitely needed!
Tuesday, 8/7 – Yoga & 4 miles
Since I didn’t complete my yoga routine on Monday, I opted to do some yoga at lunch and run in the evening. Yoga felt great after all the packing and moving the day before. These yoga poses always help me find the tight spots and really bring a great deal of relief.
I headed out for 4 miles just before dinner with my mom! I am always amazed how much quicker runs seem to go by when you run with someone else. I expected this run to feel really sluggish since I’m not used to running in the evenings, but it actually felt pretty good.
Clearly I need to up my selfie game. 😉
Wednesday, 8/8 – 5 miles with 2 x 400s, 2 x 800s, 1 x 400
This speed workout had me excited and anxious to get started. I programmed the intervals into my Garmin ahead of time, which has been so helpful these past few weeks! I can’t believe I’ve never done this before. It was pretty hot when I started to run, but my body go used to it quickly. The goal for these intervals was 2:11 for the 400s and 4:25 for the 800s. I’m happy to say that I shaved a few seconds off each goal! I was definitely breathing pretty hard in the middle of them, but this was one of those workouts that definitely left me feeling better than before I started.
Thursday, 8/9 – Strength Workout
Once again, I completed my regular strength workout. Since we are in the process of moving and packing, most of my extra workout supplies are packed. This has forced me to incorporate even more bodyweight moves than usual, but I am loving it so far!
Friday, 8/10 – 8 miles
I decided to run my longer run on Friday to save some time Saturday morning. It had been cloudy all week but of course there were blue skies when I headed out for this run! This week brought a cut back in mileage, which really helped me feel mentally strong throughout the run since it didn’t feel too long. I was proud of myself for getting used to the heat and humidity quickly, and running up all the hills that I used to think were huge. The wildflowers were beautiful and this felt like an easy run!
Saturday, 8/11 – 4 miles
These 4 miles were completed early in the morning on my favorite trail in Grand Rapids. It felt nice to get out before the heat of the day! This run was another easy one, and I was happy with the way my body bounced back after a longer run the day before.
Sunday, 8/12 – Rest
This week brought a bit of a cutback in mileage, but left me feeling mentally strong and ready for some longer runs. I’m excited to start running double digit runs consistently these next few weeks! There are just a few weeks of summer running left, so I’m really soaking them in and trying to get all this hard training out of the way before things get real.
Here’s to a new week!
